What We Collect
GoFish collects only what is needed to make the app work:
- Account information – email address and authentication credentials via Firebase Authentication. You may sign in with Email or Google.
- Email Address – collected for account management.
- Display name – collected for account management.
- GPS coordinates for fishing spot lookup – collected for app functionality.
- Approximate location (about 1 to 10 km) – collected for app functionality.
- Catch log photos (stored, and analyzed to identify the species) – collected for app functionality.
- Catch logs and chat history – collected for app functionality.
- Chat messages sent to AI assistant – collected for app functionality.
- Location data – GPS coordinates are used while the app is in use to provide location-relevant features. We do not track location in the background.
- Photos – images you capture or select are stored in Firebase Storage and linked to your account.
Fishing Assistant and Catch Identification
Messages you send to the fishing assistant, and photos you add when logging a catch, are sent through our server to an AI service provider that processes them on our behalf to answer your question or identify the species. The provider does not keep catch photos after identifying them. Chat history is stored in Firestore so you can review past conversations, and catch photos are stored with your catch log in Firebase Storage.
Catch Activity Map
When you log a catch, its species and an approximate area of about 1 km are added to the catch activity map, which other users can see as anonymized totals by species and month. Your exact location, name, photos and notes are never shared. You can turn this off at any time in Settings under "Share my catches anonymously", which also removes your past catches from the map. Deleting a catch, or your account, removes it from the map too.
Location
GoFish uses your location while the app is open to show nearby weather, fishing spots, bait shops and species. To do this, your location is sent to Google Maps Platform through our server. To show species photos seen near you, an approximate area (rounded to about 10 km) is sent to iNaturalist. We do not track your location in the background.
